Cardboard Cat Scratcher

These are like the over-priced cardboard cat scratchers that you find in the store, but these are basically free. You probably already have tape and glue and old boxes. It will take you less that an hour to make one of these and your cat will get months of fun from it.

You will need:
Corrugated Cardboard boxes (about 5 medium boxes each)
Ruler
Razor knife or Xacto knife
Masking tape
Paper, wallpaper, felt or fabric
Glue
Catnip

ROUND CAT SCRATCHER

-Choose a height for your scratch pad. 2-4” works well.
-Measure and cut the cardboard in strips so that the ridges in the cardboard are going across the width.
-Roll the cardboard strips tightly, jelly-roll style and tape the end down so it doesn’t unroll. Tape the next strip down where the last ended, wrap, tape and repeat. Keep one side flat and even, that will be the top of the scratcher. Keep adding strips until the pad is at least 1 foot in diameter.
-Cut fabric or paper to size and wrap around the outside of the scratcher. Secure with tape or glue.
-Trace the bottom circumference of the scratcher onto the paper or fabric and cut out the circle. Tape or glue onto the bottom of the scratcher.
-Sprinkle catnip over the scratcher and watch your kitty enjoy it!

RECTANGLE SCRATCHER

You will need a soda case flat (the shallow flat box that a case of canned soda or beer comes in) or you can cut down a larger box to a height of 2-4 inches.

-Measure and cut the cardboard in strips that match the height and length of your flat box.
-Cut so that the ridges in the cardboard are going across the width. Place the strips in the box until you have enough to fill the box.
-Put a strip of glue along each strip and stack them keeping one side flat for the top of the scratcher.
-Cut fabric or paper to size and wrap around the outside of the scratcher. Secure with tape or glue.
-Let the glue dry, then sprinkle catnip over the scratcher and watch the fun.
